DRIVING IN ITALY
If you have a valid European licence you may drive for up to one year after establishing residency in Italy. Thereafter you must convert your licence to an Italian one. If you have a non European licence, this is not valid to drive in Italy, you must obtain an International Licence. An International licence is valid for up to one year after establishing residency.

Please note
When driving in Italy you must have your driver’s licence with you at all times. Driving without a valid licence is a felony; should anyone be involved in a serious accident and does not possess a valid licence, they risk imprisonment.

After one year has passed, you are required to obtain an Italian licence. Some non-EU countries have a bilateral agreement whereby a licence can be converted into an Italian one; others do not. If there is no bilateral agreement then you are required to go to driver’s school and pass the Italian exam. Translators are available for the lessons but the exam has to be taken in Italian.
