Forests in Malta

Malta has two small forests: One, near Rabat, is the Buskett Forest. In the midst of the forest there is the

Verdala Palace, frowm the top of which one can see the whole circumference of the island. Originally built as a summer palace for the Grandmaster, it now serves as the summer residence of the President.

Various species of trees such as pine, fir, oak and mulberry make this one of the most beautiful parks in Malta.

The other forest is known as Miziep, in the north of the island.

VALETTA
The Argotti Botanical Gardens in Floriana on the outskirts of Valletta has a wide variety of exotic plants and some very rare types of cacti. Dating from 700’s with a Gazebo constructed in 1741. Adjacent to Argotti is St Philip’s Garden with a selection of Cyprus and Citrus trees.

Sa Maison Garden consists of five level gardens with views over Pieta Creek.

The Lower and Upper Barracca Garden
near Valletta offer breathtaking views of the city and harbour. Upper gardens are located behind Castile Place and give views of the Grans Harbour, Bighi, St Angelo and Three cities. Lower gardens are located at Fort St Elmo and also offers fantastic views of the Grand Harbour.

In Casa Leone, the Romeo Romano Garden is a 18th Century garden with fountains, an avery, watermill and museum. The Hastings Garden is the home of the monument built in honour of the Governor of Malta by the Hastings family. Views across Msida Creek and Manoel Island.

The San Anton Gardens in the grounds of San Anton Palace of Attard is a green paradise of trees, exotic plants and flowers. The property, since 1802 the residence of the British Governor and the Governor General and is now the residence of the President. The garden grounds also house a small zoo.

Howard Gardens, on bastions opposite Mdina, Named after first prime minister of Malta. The Yacht Marine Garden, located on the ex. Submarine wharf, offers a great view of the many yachts and speed boats in the area. Mooring facilities are also available. Build around the old railway station in Brikirkara, is the Old Railway Station Gardens, with a restored railway carriage of the old railway.

From the fort Senglea all around the city is where the british used too look out for enemys, when the island was under British rule. There are spectacular views from this high vantage point.

Safe Haven Garden, with views over the Grand Harbour St Elmo and Valletta Marsaskala is a beautiful fishing village with a beach at one side of the city and lovely walks around the coast. Here you will also find St Anne’s Garden, as seaside garden located in this fishing villlage.

The Ghadira Nature Reserve set in wetlands near the town of Mellieha was founded in 1978 to preserve some of the relentlessly hunted local, and migratory, bird species. Here you'll be able to see avocets, cetti warblers and black-winged stilts. Some of the migratory birds that are spotted in the Ghadira are: ruffs, plovers, little stints, greenshanks, redshanks and varieties of sandpiper. Wildlife in the reserve include wild rabbits, weasels and chameleons.

The small islet of Filfla is probably the largest reserve that this island group has. This whole islet was declared a bird sanctuary a few years ago, access is permitted only to authorised scientists who are allowed landing rights from the air.
